Young Women’s Initiative-Memphis: Building Memphis' Future Leaders

The Young Women’s Initiative (YWI-Memphis) is dedicated to empowering young women of color, ages 12-24, by building leadership skills and providing equal access to opportunities, economic security, and safety.

For the 2023-24 cohort, YWI-Memphis, in partnership with the YWCA of Greater Memphis, served 15 teen girls and young women, focusing on nurturing the next generation of leaders. Their hard work and dedication culminated in a heartwarming award ceremony on June 4, 2024, celebrating their growth and accomplishments.

Young Women’s Advisory Council (YWAC) Participatory Grantmaking

IMG 3257A standout achievement of the cohort was the work of the Young Women’s Advisory Council (YWAC). The YWAC Memphis cohort selected Beautiful Spirited Women (BSW) to receive $15,000 in participatory grant funds. BSW is a youth program that offers leadership and mentoring to girls in the community, perfectly aligning with YWI's mission to uplift and empower.

YWAC participants took charge of the entire grantmaking process, from hosting application rounds and conducting interviews to making site visits and selecting the recipient. Their dedication and thoughtful decision-making highlight the incredible potential and leadership qualities these young women possess.

WFGM and YWCA Memphis, are both honored to support such outstanding local organizations and to celebrate the remarkable achievements of these young leaders. Together, we are fostering a brighter future for our community.
